National Insurance Number (NIN, NINo, NI Number) is the UK identification number for taxes and social security. It is required for legal employment, filing tax returns, and receiving benefits (Universal Credit, State Pension).

Who needs a NIN

  • Anyone working in the UK
  • Anyone filing a tax return with HMRC
  • Holders of Settled / Pre-settled Status
  • Individuals applying for social benefits

Step by step

Step 1: Check if you already have a NIN

If you lived in the UK as a child (your parents had the Right to Reside), a NIN may have been automatically assigned to you on your 16th birthday. Check:

  • Old documents (P60, payslips, letters from HMRC)
  • Online HMRC account — gov.uk/personal-tax-account
  • Call the NI Helpline: 0300 200 3500

Step 2: Online application

  1. Go to gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number
  2. Fill out the online form
  3. Attach scans of documents (passport, proof of address)
  4. You will receive confirmation via email
  5. HMRC may invite you for an interview (online or in person) — increasingly rare
  6. After verification, you will receive your NIN by mail

Required documents

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of address in the UK (Council Tax bill, rental agreement, bank letter)
  • Proof of immigration status (Settled Status, Pre-settled, BRP card)
  • Proof of right to work in the UK

NIN is FREE. Websites charging fees are scams.

How long does it take

  • Online application — 4-16 weeks to receive NIN
  • With an interview — an additional 2-6 weeks
  • In practice, by 2026: typically 8-12 weeks

Can I work without a NIN?

YES. Lack of a NIN is NOT an obstacle to starting work. Your employer can hire you and should:

  • Enroll you in payroll with a temporary number
  • Pay you a normal salary
  • Deduct tax + NI from your salary
  • Input your NIN into the system after you receive it

Remember: report your NIN to your employer IMMEDIATELY after receiving it — unassigned payroll can cause tax errors.

NIN and Emergency Tax

Without a NIN, HMRC may apply an Emergency Tax Code, which means higher tax deductions from your salary. Once your NIN and correct tax code are entered, any overpayment is automatically refunded (the tax year starts on April 6).

NIN structure

The NIN format is: QQ 12 34 56 X (2 letters + 6 digits + 1 letter). The first 2 letters do not start with D, F, I, Q, U, V (reserved); the last letter is A, B, C, or D.

NIN security

  • DO NOT carry the letter with your NIN on you
  • Do not provide your NIN over the phone to "HMRC" — HMRC NEVER calls asking for your NIN
  • Employers, banks, and benefit providers may ask for your NIN — this is legitimate
  • Stores, restaurants, service providers do NOT have the right to ask

Common mistakes

  • Waiting to apply until receiving your first paycheck — delays the refund of Emergency Tax
  • Applying before settling (no UK address) — rejection
  • Failing to report your NIN to your employer after receiving it — tax errors
  • Paying agents for "faster" processing — complete scam
  • Confusing NIN with NHS Number — these are two different identifiers
