How to Skip Lines — Tactics

1. Schedule an Appointment Online

Most states offer online appointments:

Without an appointment: walk-in, several hours of waiting. With an appointment: 15-30 minutes.

2. Choose Location Wisely

  • Smaller towns / suburbs — shorter lines than downtown
  • Mid-week, mid-month — avoid Mondays, Fridays, end of the month
  • Tuesday-Thursday, 10am-2pm — best
  • NYC: avoid Manhattan — Brooklyn, Queens are better
  • Chicago: avoid Lake County — Cook County suburbs are better

3. AAA Membership

Some states allow AAA members to handle matters at AAA offices (renewal, registration, title) — no DMV lines!

  • CA: most DMV services
  • FL: some
  • OH: some
  • Cost: AAA membership $50-100/year

4. Mobile DMV / DMV Express

  • Some states have "mobile DMV" traveling to cities
  • "DMV Express" centers with fewer services but faster
  • NY: "DMV by Appointment" — only with an appointment, no walk-ins, fast

5. Online Kiosks

CA, NV, AZ: kiosks in supermarkets (Target, AAA, some Walgreens) for renewal registration. 5 minutes.
