Introduction / Who is it for
In the USA, each state issues its own driver license (US driver license). It is required for legal driving, opening a bank account, renting an apartment, and almost everything else. A Polish driver's license is temporarily acceptable for tourists, but as a resident, you must obtain an American one.
Is a Polish driver's license sufficient
- Tourists (ESTA, B-2) — a Polish driver's license + translation or International Driving Permit (IDP) is sufficient for stays up to 90 days.
- Long-term residents — you have 30-60 days from settling in a given state to obtain a local driver's license. After this period, the Polish driver's license loses its legal validity.
- Other states accept reciprocity with some countries — Poland does not have such an agreement with the USA, so you must pass the American exam.
Required Documents
The list depends on the state, but usually includes:
- Proof of identity — valid passport
- Proof of immigration status — visa, I-94, Green Card, EAD
- SSN or proof of denial (SSN denial letter) if you do not qualify
- 2 proofs of address — lease agreement, bills, bank letter
- Polish driver's license with sworn translation (sometimes required)
- Fee — 30-100 USD depending on the state
Step by Step
- Check state requirements — your state's DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) website
- Study the Driver's Manual — free PDF on the DMV website
- Schedule an appointment at the DMV — in some states walk-in is allowed, in others an appointment is mandatory
- Submit documents + fee + vision test
- Pass the written test (Knowledge Test) — 20-50 multiple choice questions, time 30-60 minutes, passing threshold 80%
- Receive Learner's Permit / Instruction Permit — allows driving with a licensed driver (21+)
- Practice for a minimum of 1-3 months (depending on the state)
- Schedule Road Test at the DMV
- Pass the practical exam — 15-30 minutes with an examiner
- Receive your driver's license — often a temporary paper immediately, plastic card mailed within 2-4 weeks
What the Practical Exam Tests
- Vehicle check (driver's returns, lights, brakes)
- Parallel parking — the most common problem for test-takers
- 3-point turn
- Backing up in a straight line
- Stop signs — full stop for 3 seconds
- Yield, signaling
- Lane changes, signaling
- Response to emergency situations
Exam in Your Own Car
Most states require you to arrive for the exam in your own car (or one rented from a driving school). The car must have:
- Valid insurance (insurance card)
- Current registration
- Working lights, turn signals, brakes
- Seat belts
Costs
- DMV fee — 30-100 USD
- Written test — often included
- Road test — 20-50 USD if separate
- Driving school (optional) — 200-700 USD for the course
- Driving lesson with an instructor — 50-100 USD/hour
- International Driving Permit (from Poland) — 100 PLN at the Polish Automobile Club
- Translation of Polish driver's license — 30-80 USD at a sworn translator
Common Mistakes
- Failing the written test due to not reading the manual
- Taking the exam in your own car without insurance/registration — automatic fail
- Insufficient practice in parallel parking — the most common reason for failure
- Incomplete stop at a stop sign (rolling stop) — automatic fail
- Not checking mirrors before changing lanes — fail
- Stress leading to sudden braking/nervous movements
What Next
After receiving your driver's license:
- Purchase liability insurance (auto insurance) — legally required in all states
- Register your car at the DMV
- Build credit history by paying insurance premiums regularly
- After 1-2 years without accidents, premiums decrease by 20-50%
REAL ID States
As of May 2025, a REAL ID (or passport) will be required for domestic flights within the USA. Most new driver's licenses in the USA are already REAL ID-compliant — check if it has a star in the upper right corner.
