A Polish driver's license in the USA is temporarily accepted for tourists and new residents, but after establishing residency, you typically must exchange it for an American one within 30-90 days. Poland does NOT have a full reciprocity agreement with most states — you must go through the normal process (knowledge test + road test).
When a Polish Driver's License Works in the USA
Tourists (up to 1 year)
- Polish driver's license + passport = OK
- All 50 states accept it for visitors
- International Driving Permit (IDP) recommended as a "translation" — issued by PZM in Poland
New Residents
- Grace period: 30-90 days from establishing residency
- After this period: you must have a state driver's license
- Definition of "resident": varies by state, typically: two months of living, employment, rental, child in school
International Driving Permit (IDP) — What It Is
- IS NOT a driver's license — it is a translation of your Polish license into 10+ languages
- Valid only with a Polish driver's license
- Issued by Polski Związek Motorowy (PZM) in Poland
- Cost: ~50-100 PLN
- Valid for 12 months
- NOT sufficient for residency in the USA — only for visits
Where to Obtain an IDP
- Go to PZM in Poland with your Polish driver's license + photo
- Can also be done through the Polish Consulate in the USA (takes a few weeks)
- NOTE: scammers sell fake IDPs online for $50-100. Only PZM is official.
Exchanging for an American License — Typical Process
Each state has its own requirements, but the typical process is:
Step 1: Documents
- Valid passport
- Visa / Green Card / EAD — proof of status
- Polish driver's license (original + sworn translation or IDP)
- SSN or ITIN (some states require this)
- Two proofs of address (utility bill, lease, bank statement)
- Birth certificate with translation (rarely required)
Step 2: Knowledge Test (theoretical exam)
- 25-50 questions on road signs + regulations
- Computerized or paper
- Minimum 70-80% correct (depending on the state)
- Available in Polish in: NY, NJ, IL, MA, CA, MI, CT, WI, PA, FL (check locally)
- Buy "DMV Driver's Manual" or use dmv.org, freedmvpractice.com
Step 3: Vision Test
- Reading a board with letters
- Color light test
- Free, ~5 minutes
Step 4: Permit or Instructional License
- Some states: if you pass the knowledge test → you get a "learner's permit" → you must now learn with a licensed driver
- Other states: if you pass the knowledge test → you can immediately take the road test (if you have a long-standing license from Poland)
Step 5: Road Test (practical exam)
- 15-30 minutes in a car with an examiner
- Parking, parallel parking (NOT in every state), left/right turn, stop sign, yield, change lanes
- Scoring: typically max 30 mistakes (or fail for dangerous mistakes — running a stop sign, etc.)
- Polish accent OK — but you must understand the examiner's instructions
Check [[jak-zdac-driving-test-w-usa]] for strategies for the road test.
Step 6: License
- You receive a temporary paper license immediately
- Plastic card by mail in 2-4 weeks
- Valid for 4-8 years (depending on the state)
States with Reciprocity with Poland
VERY LIMITED. Most states require at least a road test. Some require ALL tests. Specific states in 2026:
Require ALL TESTS (knowledge + road + vision)
- Most states — NY, NJ, FL, CA, TX, MA, etc.
May have reciprocity (check locally)
- Some states offer discounts for experienced drivers (age + long valid license)
- Maryland historically accepted translation + vision only for EU drivers
- Iowa had a waiver program for the knowledge test for certain countries
NOTE: Policies change. Always check with your local DMV/MVA before planning.
Translation of Polish Driver's License
Accepted Translations
- Sworn translator (certified)
- Polish consulate in the USA — will issue an official translation
- AAA International Driving Permit translation service ($20-25)
- IDP from PZM Poland
Not Accepted
- Google Translate
- Homemade translation (done by yourself)
- Online "certified" translation for $5 (usually a scam)
Special Situations
Military Personnel and Their Families
U.S. military stationed abroad can use their state license extended automatically. Poles with American military: different rules.
Diplomats
Polish consular staff have reciprocity under the Vienna Convention. Check with the consulate.
CDL (Commercial Driver's License)
A Polish truck driver's license is NOT accepted. You must take the CDL knowledge + road test from scratch. See [[cdl-prawo-jazdy-ciezarowki-w-usa-dla-polakow]].
Interstate Exchange
If you have a NY license and move to FL: typically only a vision test, no knowledge/road. Interstate reciprocity applies.

What Not to Do
- DO NOT drive with an expired Polish driver's license
- DO NOT exceed the grace period (your state)
- DO NOT show Polish + American driver's licenses from older states — it may confuse the officer
- DO NOT buy a fake online — federal crime
After the Exchange
- Polish driver's license: keep it as proof of identity in Poland. You do NOT have to surrender it.
- American + Polish together: OK. In the USA, you use the American one. In Poland: the first 6 months the American is sufficient, then the Polish (or IDP).
- Returning to Poland: if you live there again, the Polish driver's license automatically comes back into effect
Common Mistakes
- Exceeding the grace period — ticket for driving without a proper license
- Lack of translation when applying for a permit
- Poor preparation for the knowledge test — typically 30% fail the first time
- Not checking state requirements before visiting the DMV
- Not bringing all documents → you have to return
- Not obtaining SSN before visiting in states that require it
- Wrong fear of "they will take my Polish license" — no one takes it, you keep it
Polish Driving Schools
In major Polish diaspora areas (NYC, Chicago, NJ, Detroit), there are driving schools with Polish staff:
- Theoretical lessons in Polish
- Practical lessons with a Polish instructor
- Car for the road test (if you don't have your own)
- Cost: $40-80/lesson, $300-600 for a package
Look for them in informacja.com/firmy under the "driving schools" category.
